Beginner - Learning How To Play Drums-p Iv
nível sem nível
The last lesson, you learned funky beats and a bass warm-up. here you will learn
more about the hi-hat. THis dosnt 'jazz' up a beat quite as much as an extra bass
hit, but sounds good if its right. Since i can't show it to you, i'll try to explain
explain it briefly

Opening the hi-hat means just lifting up your foot and hitting the hi-hat with the
top part up, so the top part vibrates like a cymbal. This makes it louder and is
good for signalling in lessons the end of a beat or start of a new one (in the same
run) The hi-hat can be open all the way so you just hear the top cymbal. But
whats usually done, is you open it just enough so when you hit the top, the bottom is
also struck by the cymbal so both are vibrating at the same time. I would try that. Sometimes if you watch videos, you can see them hitting it open. So you might get the point by now, this is the sign for hitting the open hi hat

O- open hi-hat

You close the hi-hat on the next hit, and keep it back down, but dont stop the hi hat
from vibrating right away.

H|o---o---o---O---|o---o---o---O---|
S|----x-------x---|----x-------x---|
B|x-------x-------|x-------x-------|
  1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4

just think...open the hi hat on the snare hit, and close it on the bass, every other
time (or two beats). Now Try this.

H|o---O---o---o---|o---o---o---O---
S|----x-------x---|----x-------x---
B|x-------x-x-----|x-x-----x-------

Now heres one more

H|o---o---o---O---|o---o---O-c-O-c-|
S|----x-------x---|----x-------x---|
B|x-------x-------|x-------x-------|

Tougher huh? when you open the hi hat here, those c's on the + count mean close the
hi hat on that count, dont hit it. If you dont get it, then just forget about the
Cs and play it like it would be. You'll find out what c really means later...
Now I cant put more hi hat tabs and have it help you out. The key is to get the
hi-hat to sound right when you open it. Its not to hard to get it to sound right,
just open it enough so it dosnt 'chip' anymore when you hit it, then close it again
so it does. good luck.

PART IV.5
The left hand

here you will not just learn how to add some extra hits to the beat like the bass (
to start you will),but you will learn different techniques and things you can do to
 the drums.
Here the first one, just to get warmed-up, and i will only put the counts under the
snare hits here since the rest is the same

H|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
S|----x-----x-x---|----x-----x-x---
B|x-------x-------|x-------x-------
      2 + 4 2 + 4

H|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
S|----x-x---x---x-|----x-x---x---x-
B|x-------x-------|x-------x-------
      2 + +(4)+ 2 + +(4)+

Now heres the first part of learning new things to do to the drum while playing.
This is called a rim-shot.you have to hit the rim of the drum and the head of it at
the same time to get it to sound louder. If you do it perfect you will hear the sound
of the metal strings underneath the drum vibrate, but dont worry about that.
This takes tons of practice to get it right every time, and usually, people hit the
rim instead of both the rim and head.

^ - Rimshot

This will not always appear like this on a tab. It might be rs or r instead, but
they should label it.

H|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
S|----^-------^---|----^-------^---
B|x-------x-------|x-------x-------
  1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

This next part is a rim -knock. here, you lay the stick on the drum, with the tip on
the head and the end hanging off, and you lift up the bottom of the stick and just
let it hit the rim of the snare drum, without lifting up the top of the stick (thats
laying on the head of the drum already). That may have made no sense, but you might
be able to get the basic idea

           \_______/
This is sort of a 3D picture from the side/top
of the drum showing you how the stick is
sopposed to lay on the drum.

H|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
S|----v-------v---|----v-------v---
B|x-------x-------|x-------x-------
  1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

If your making faster beats, you may just want to hit the rim without laying it down first.
This next part is my favorite part of learning about the snare drum, and probably
my favrite part of drumming. This is the Ghost stroke. Here, you will hit the snare drum inbetween the hi hat counts softly so it barely sounds like its there.

g - ghost stroke

H|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-|o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-
S|----x--g-g--x---|----x--g-g--x---
B|x---------x-----|x---------x-----
  1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +

As you see, the ghost isnt in the number count underneath, so its a little tougher.
If this is to confusing, try these steps to help you out
~play the ghost notes loud like the other notes
~dont add the bass drum on the 3+ count
~slow down to understand were to hit the drum
The do these steps in reverse once you get the hang of it to get it right
You an also add the open hi-hat at the end of this if you want.

This concludes my Beginner lessons of learning how to play drums P 1-4. The rest is in the intermediate section, which will have Flows of the drums, Fills, and
coordination. It will not be as fun as this lesson, but is important to drumming
(especially fills and around the drums) I suggest you take a few more days to go
over these lessons So you can do it with no problems.
Remeber this divided into parts ao you can do each one induvidually, and if you
have trouble on one, then thats why theres a P(#).5, so you do each one different.
Go check out my Intermediate section when i get it done soon. Rate this on how much
It helped.

Here's a little extra thing i added to help you out. Since you now know how to sit
down and 'jam' with funky beats, bass warm-ups, and ghost strokes, this will help
you get syncronized with other music. If you have a friend that plays guitar, give
him this tab

Tell whoever it is to use his/her index finger and thumb to play, and they can
add a little extra stuff if they want to the e string. This is an incredibly basic riff for them to play (or i like to call embarissangly easy since no one would want to show off asomething this easy to others), and is the easiest riff for you to drum too. just give it a try.
