Beginner - Drum Lesson Five
nível sem nível
Lesson 5 now, can you guess whats next?

Count sixteenth notes for this lesson.

For this lesson, we are going to only focus on sixteenth notes on the hihat. This section takes some time to get down properly, and after that it only gets harder, so we have to start from the beginning all over again!

(note: above beats, im going to put either ‘R’ or ‘L’. r = right hand, l = left hand)

Try this:

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR (or L if you are left handed)
H| xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |
S| o o |
B| o o |
RLRLRLRLRLRLRLRL |
H| xxxx-xxxxxxx-xxx |
S| o o |
B| o o |
Which was harder? Which did you get faster? The answer for most people is the bottom one for both questions. Switching hands is more complicated, especially since you have to switch from hi hat to snare to hihat again. The top one is a lot easier, you probably got it down in almost one try, right? Yah. For this lesson, im going to work on the switching hands only, its not too hard to teach yourself how to play with the same hand. Okay, moving on, RLRLRLRLRLRLRLRL |
H| xxxx-xxxxxxx-xxx |
S| o o |
B| o o |
Take another look at this beat. Notice how the snare notes have no hi-hat note with them. This is because instead of hitting the hi-hat with your right hand, you move down to the snare, and them come back up to the hi-hat. It may sound complicated, but once you get the feel for it, its sometimes hard not too! No joke! Okay, these aren’t really beats, they are exercises. They don’t sound good, but there is a point in playing them. It builds your stamina and coordination. Work on these until they are simple things for you, then we move on. (if you are left handed, start with your left hand) RLRLRLRLRLRLRLRL

S| o o o o |

RLRLRLRLRLRLRLRL |
H| xxxx-xxxxxxx-x-x |
S| o o o |
B| o o |
For that one, on the last two snare notes, just leave your hand down there until you hit the second note on the snare, and then come up. Now some harder beats. Keep switching, and counting while you play.

Okay, keep doingthose, but make your own snare beats. Those snare beats are always on the right hand. But what about the left hand? We are coming to that, putting your other hand in can cause some confusion, so im not going to that quite yet. Lets work on the bass. In all of these beats, the bass is played with the right hand on the hi-hat. We’ll move to left hand shortly. 1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a

Not too hard, eh? 1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a

Okay, now we are getting to the point. The above beat is a mix of bass and snare beats. Im going to keep making those. 1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a

And that ends lesson five! In lesson six, im going to work with you on the left hand snare notes, and playing bass notes accompanied by a left hand hihat. But since you’ve done all this practicing and not so much “fun”, im going to give you a beat from the band U2 called “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. This is what I think it is after hearing it, so its not prefect, but its still really fun. Its not played to quickly, listen to the song and try to play along with it. Keep playing this whole thing through. Alternate hands on the hi hat (you’ll also have to alternate hands on he snare to keep up the same speed) 1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a 1e+a2e+a3e+a4e+a
