Here is a simple 5/4 pattern for those who want to venture out of
the realm of 4/4.  I found odd time signatures hard to play largely in part because they are hard to count.  A way to resolve that is to divid the measure.  In this pattern it is easy think of it as a 2 count and a 3 count (in this case a simple waltz) combined.  This is basic frame work of a 5/4 pattern.  So as it because second nature, be creative and alter the pattern.  A good variation is to play the beat at a fairly fast tempo and add a bass hit on the and of 3.
